Good Luck Everyone!!!!

Good Morning Friends!

It’s another chilly morning here in Michigan!  We had 80 degree temps in March and snow flurries in April, such a fun state for weather! What are your plans around your farm or city backyard this spring? Ours are to build a quail coop and finish a bigger chicken coop!  I’m so excited for both, my husband has been doing a wonderful job building the quails a lovely “condo” I can’t wait to get them in it!  I am building a bigger chicken coop using recycled materials like wood pallets, it’s been challenging since I’m no builder, but I think the chickens will love it once they’re in it! I’ll be posting pictures soon.  Have a fun-filled day!!!

Deviled Egg Chicks

Deviled Egg Chick

How many of you enjoy deviled eggs for Easter?  I know we do in my family, it’s tradition.  Here’s a very cute and creative way that is sure to “Oooh and Awww” your guests.

Directions:

Hard boil eggs as usual, cool, then cut the pointed end off, you will have to go about 1/3 of the way down to have enough room to dig out the yolk.  Then dig out your yolk and make your deviled filling the way you like it.  Overfill the wide end with the filling.  I use pieces of black olives or moistened black pepper shaped into balls (because I like black pepper on my eggs) for the eyes and little bits of carrot cut into triangles for the beak.  Top with the pointed end of the egg white and now you have cute little hatching deviled egg chicks!  So fun, so easy and a great way to cook with your kids too!

Hatching Update And….

Well, as I suspected, the Silkie hatch didn’t go well:(  What is it about that breed?  If anyone can chime in on their experiences hatching Silkies or if you know why they are difficult to hatch successfully, I would love to hear about it.

We did have 1 lil cutie hatch, but she’s not doing very well at all.  She has a bad leg. I’m trying to fix her but I’m not too convinced I can:(

Today I set up the incubator again to start some new clutches!  This time I will be incubating, Serama Bantams, some unknown chicken breeds from a friend’s farm whose birds all free range and some Quail eggs.

Remember there will be a contest going on soon, once we reach 100 likes on our facebook page.  So head on over and give us like and then stay tuned for contest details and the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT as to what the prize will be.  I’ll give you a hint: *it will be something animal related.*  Have a great day friends!

Silkie hatching update

Well, today is day 22 and so far, the silkie eggs have not hatched.  However, I can see movement in at least 1 egg, so the fate of the eggs is still undetermined.  I’m not sure what it is with silkies that makes them so much harder to hatch than other breeds of chickens, but for some reason, I have trouble with them.  Then again, maybe it’s something I’m doing or not doing for that matter.  I have only been hatching eggs for a short time.  I will keep you updated….
